AW: Hikikomori

The film that tackles the hikikomori issue most "authentically" is perhaps Sakaguchi Katsumi's Blue Tower (Ao no t?) made in 2000. The main characters, a hikikomori youth and his mother, are played by non-professional actors who have first hand experience. T?ru is played by Nakamura Y?suke, a former hikikomori, his mother by Sawa Masako, who in real life has a hikikomori son. Both have after the film written a book on their hikikomori experience as well. The film hasn't been released on DVD yet (and perhaps it never will be), but it has been shown at several film festivals abroad. If you contact the director he might provide you with a subtitled preview video. The homepage includes information in English about the film as well as how to get in contact with Sakaguchi's company Supersaurus.

I apologize if this has been brought up before I joined the list, but I was wondering if anyone could offer a list of Japanese films about hikikomori (that have English subtitles, of course), whether as the main plot or as a subplot.

Thanks.
