Alex and others,

?Pacchigi!? is more closely based on Matsuyama Takeshi?s
semi-autobiographical ?Shounen M no Imujingawa? (Youth M?s Imjin River,
2002) and the song ?Imujingawa? (Imjin River), made popular by the group The
Folk Crusaders in the late 1960s.

A more explicit debt to ?Romeo and Juliet? can be seen in the 2001 film ?GO?
(dir. Yukisada Isao), and the 2000 novel on which it?s based, although I
think the Romeo and Juliet-style love story in ?GO,? ?Pacchigi!,? and even
?Gaki teikoku,? Izutsu?s 1981 film about zainichi Koreans and yakuza, is not
as simple or as straightforward as it seems.

If anyone?s interested, I?m giving a talk entitled ?Romeo and Jong-il:
Queering the Korean Diaspora in Japan? at the upcoming AAS meeting in
Boston.

Best,

Thanks for clarification about the Kitamura film. Now, two questions about
Kazuyuki Izutsu, specifically about Pacchigi which I've not yet had the
chance to see.
