There are actually two live action films: Kadokawa Haruki, who produced
the 1983 version, ended up directing another version in 1997 as one
means of coming back into the industry after his conviction. Also, the
animated version is set up as a "sequel" to the Tsutsui story, with the
heroine of the novel/films becoming the aunt of the animated heroine.

I should note that this has also been done on TV at least three times:
one as a TV movie in 1985, another as a TV series in 1994, and finally
in 2002 as part of a Morning Musume special.
