Forest Stories

You might want to check out _Himatsuri_, directed by Yanagimachi Mitsuo,
adapted from a story by Nakagami Kenji, camera by Tamura Masaki (of Ogawa
fame, who has worked with a lot of later indie directors). It's on VHS,
through Ebay or Amazon. Google him--there's some nice writing about the film
& Yanagimachi over and above the databases.

You can see from one of the Amazon reviews ("the shaky and honest feel of a
non-studio film") that it's an indie film. It plays to a lot of the tensions
of Nakagami's stories--mysticism, masculinity that intensifies the farther
it gets from the metropole, focus on senses and landscape. Indeed it's
almost too pretty for words at times, with the wind, trees, mountain
goddesses and all. Music is by Takemitsu Toru.
