Dear subscribers of Kinejapan,
thank you for your valuable comments and recommendations. Your thoughts on that issue really proofed helpful for my research. Moreover I'm forced to rethink my intentions and research trajectory in face of that particular problem.
I recently returned to Noel Burchs study on japanese cinema: To the distant observer. I find Burch's observation of the seperation of the enunciative instances in japanese performative arts and cinema (e.g. benshi) most illuminating for my project. This is also a great example of the adaptaion of a western technology, infused with aesthetic 'modules' that are specifically japanese.
But maybe I have to concentrate on the particular movies I'm researching. Though interpreting them through various theoretical goggles may be tempting; I think the close analysis of these films can inform theory and not vice versa.
Again thanks to everybody that helped me with that problem, it was a really great introduction to this discussion group.
Best wishes,
Robert Geib
