The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Center for
Japanese Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, invite
applications for fellowships to support research in Japanese film at
Berkeley?s Pacific Film Archive (PFA). The PFA holds over one thousand
Japanese films, most dating from the 1950s through the 1980s, representing
major studios and a wide range of directors. The goal of the fellowship is
to allow scholars (including graduate students) to further their own
research by examining the PFA's collection of 35mm prints of rarely seen
films. Fellows will be required to complete a basic questionnaire about each
print viewed and to produce a filmography and/or brief essay, to be kept on
file with the PFA. Applicants are required to provide a list of the specific
films they wish to view, and describe the general organizing principle of
their film selection and final filmography/essay (i.e., by theme, director,
actor, time-period, genre, etc.). Preference will be given to applicants
requesting the viewing of films not yet catalogued. Some films in the
collection may not be accessible due to conservation issues. Six feature
films may be viewed per week for up to six weeks. Viewing films available on
video/dvd is discouraged. The collection can be searched at
http://bampfa.berkeley.edu/resources/pfa_filmcollection/index.html or
http://lib.berkeley.edu <http://lib.berkeley.edu/> . For more information on
holdings, prospective applicants may contact Nancy Goldman,
pfalibrary at berkeley.edu, or Mona Nagai, mona at berkeley.edu.

The fellowship generally supports residency for between two and six weeks,
during the summer (June 11-August 17, 2007). The application deadline is
January 15. Transportation, room and board, and a small stipend will be
provided. A $10 research fee per film will be paid by the visitor. For
inquiries please contact Alan Tansman, at tansmana at berkeley.edu. Send
description of project, CV, and names and contact information of two
references to to tansmana at berkeley.edu, or to Alan Tansman 104 Durant Hall
UC Berkeley Berkeley CA 94708-2230.
