Yumani is reprinting Kinema Shuho with the Film Center. This is, along
with Kokusai Eiga Shinbun, the most important prewar industry rag.
Extremely valuable for tracking what was going on in the film business
in the 1930s. The people behind it are a crazy combination if there
ever was one. Founded by Tanaka Jun'ichiro, he gave the reins to
figures like former censor Tachibana Takahiro and former Prokino
founder Sasa Genju. It's a meaty, precious resource.
As you can imagine it's pricey. But if you are at an institutional
with the library that can afford, make sure they buy it. These
reprints are expensive because they sell so few sets; even one set
helps keep them economically viable. But we are lucky in Japanese film
studies to have so many paper reprints. They have made it so, so much
easier to access the archive?no matter where you are.
