It was Nitta in Gunma, which is where he was born. The city name is  
now different (Ota-shi) because of all the gappei, so I am not sure  
what has happened (I have not yet gone up there yet). But I did deal  
with the Ota people when ordering the "Eiga e no omoi" series, which  
is basically the catalog of the film history symposium they held  
there for 6 years.
