Man'ei Films and Yoshida

Stephen, very nice to be on the list of "people you respect" - thankyou very much.

Roger, re. Shigeyoshi Suzuki, there is indeed only one film listed on the JMDB by Man'ei, but the JMDB is not wholly reliable or complete with Man'ei productions. Suzuki actually made quite a number of films in Manchuria from 1939 through to 1945, and these are listed in the Kinema Junpo jiten.

The 1939 film you mention - reading is difficult, and indeed this is one of the ones that led me to pose the query in the first place (can anyone answer it?). If it was intended for Chinese audiences, it would have a Chinese reading, and if the Japanese reading was intended to parallel this, it would probably be like the one you suggest (ie, all on-yomi). Bu several Japanese I've shown this title to have suggested that the most natural way to read this in Japanese in with a mixed on/kun reading, Fuki haru yume.

    Interesting question, Alex.

You say "Examples include the films that Shigeyoshi Suzuki realised while in Manchuria between 1939 and 1945.". JMDb seems only to list one by Manei: ?x?M?t?? , which I read as Fuki shunmu, 1939 (Dream of spring and wealth) (am ready to be corrected, as ever). There were others ? We need your book!
  regards,
  Roger

By the way, a quick query about film production in wartime Manchuria.

During the war, Man'ei made some films which have distinctly Chinese-looking titles (ie, no kana in the titles; characters that don't seem to have been in regular use in prewar / wartime Japanese). Examples include the films that Shigeyoshi Suzuki realised while in Manchuria between 1939 and 1945.

My question is, were these films intended for showing exclusive to local audiences? Or were they exported back to Japan as records of customs in the colonies, or to encourage emigration? If the latter, would there also be an expected Japanese-style reading of these titles, as there sometimes is for Chinese place names or famous works of literature and so forth?

I shall be grateful for any clarification!

  Best,

  ALEX
