I went to see this today it is indeed worth a visit! There are a lot of
interesting posters, benshi scripts, scrapbooks, and other documents,
including letters, contracts, and benshi licenses, owned by the benshi
Komada Koyo (1877-1935). There is also a fascinating section on
"utsushi-e," the projected picture-slides that were incorporated into oral
and musical storytelling performances from the beginning of the 19th
century (late Edo period) through the Meiji Period. You will see slides of
such popular stories as Dojoji, Kanjincho (the Subscription List), and the
legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon being boiled alive as punishment for his
crimes, as well as a video of a modern utsushi-e performance. The exhibit
catalogue is also a steal at 500 Yen!
