Thanks to Melek for mentioning this. If I could put in a second word,  
this is a reference book that has literally been ten years in the  
making and involves many of the major figures in film studies in  
Japan. I dropped by the Nihon Tosho Senta in March when they were  
going over the final galleys and it all looks quite impressive. It  
will definitely become one of the central reference books for  
studying cinema in Japanese, so I strongly recommend that you get  
your library to purchase it if you can't buy it yourself.
