Dear Colleagues,

On May 29, from 11 to 2, in HIB 137, a graduate student-faculty
workshop will be held on the following theme:
THINKING ABOUT MUSEUMS, EXHIBITS, AND THE MODERN CITY--SOME JAPANESE
POINTS OF DEPARTURE
The guest speakers will be three historians of Japan doing work that
touches upon museums and/or exhibitions in urban settings: Julia
Thomas of Notre Dame (author of a prize-winning book on Japanese
discourses of nature), Jordan Sand of Georgetown (author of a prize-
winning book on Japanese concepts of the "home"), and William Marotti
of UCLA (a specialist in Japan in the 1960s and the history fo the
Japanese avant garde). A full program, including names of
discussants (people working on urban settings in other parts of the
world), will follow.
The event is sponsored by the UCI Humanities Center and the School of
Humanities' "Pacific Rim Urban Futures" working group; with
additional logistical or other support from the History Department
and the Center for Asian Studies.
A light lunch will be provided to participants.
if you plan to come, please rsvp by sending an e-mail to me:
