WWII Memory and Japanese Film

It's certainly an interesting question. Alan Gerow's 2006 *Fantasies of War
and Nation in Recent Japanese Cinema* sees a "resurgence of neo-nationalist
thought" leading to an increase in alternate reality versions of WWII. This
is also still a reasonably popular topic in television anime. If there has
been a recent downturn in war films perhaps the large budgets usually
involved is a significant factor?
