Returning to 'Noir' for a moment, there's a book 'East Asian Cinemas: Exploring Transnational Connections on Film', edited by Leon Hunt and Leung Wing-Fai, 2008 (which might not have been mentioned on this list, yet). It has a chapter 'Transnational Noir: Style and Substance in Hayashi Kaizo's The Most Terrible Time in my Life, by Theresa L. Geller - as well as some other Japanese-related chapters.
