Dear,
I was wondering whether Kanai Katsu?s Mujin Retto/Desert Archipelago was
considered by Japanese critics as a part of the Landscape Theory movement? The
director seemed to be a close friend of Masao Adachi (who shot Aka Serial Killer
the same year), and the question about identity in post-war japan is clearly the
core of Mujin Retto. However I have to admit that this theory is not all that
clear for me (to say the least!) , landscape and urban setting play an important
role in the movie, but they seem to work more on an surrealistic level (or a
kind of ?distorted? reality) than as a pure documentary ?key-pictures/shots? to
question the state of the japanese society. Maybe that question was discussed
during the Kanai event in Berkeley?
Speaking about Landscape Theory, are there others movies listed as part of the
movement ? (I have ?listed? Aka Serial Killer, Live Today, Die Tomorrow!, Man
who left his will on film, Violation of 13).
(Any corrections/details about that cryptic theory are much-welcomed! )
Martin
