snake in money

Hi!

Just a small question not related to cinema: a friend of mine is
translating a Jorge Luis Borges novel from Spanish to Finnish, and
there is a passage in the novel claiming that in Japanese money the
8-headed snake, connected to the Kusanagi sword legend, is pictured.
The snake is not pictured in the current money (renewed 2004). Was it
maybe in some older coins or paper notes?
