For any grad students out there like me:

Yoyogi youth hostel has private rooms -- in fact, they ONLY have private rooms. So while it's nothing like as comfortable as a hotel, you can get a good night's sleep. It's something like 3000 yen a night if you're a youth hostel member. You can find it at the Hostelling International website.
I haven't checked the travel times to the conference, but I was there for a conference before xmas; the venue was in Roppongi and it was an easy commute.
The youth hostel itself is only 15 minutes walk from Shinjuku, and on the edge of Yoyogi park so it's possible to do a little sightseeing by foot from there.

    If I may ask:

I am one of probably many SCMS members and a Kinejapaner who has never visited Japan.

I would welcome recommendations from people about hotels near the conference and also the best way to find information on some kind of sightseeing guides. I plan to stay several extra days before or after the conference.

    thanks.
