Just a quick announcement that Deborah Shamoon (Notre Dame) has a new
article out in the latest issue of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture
and Society (vol. 35, no. 1) called "Misora Hibari and the Girl Star
in Postwar Japanese Cinema."
She traces out Hibari's film career in the context of postwar girl's
culture and then focuses in on how the film The Izu Dancer (Izu no
odoriko) was obsessively remade not only to iconize girl stars like
Yoshinaga Sayuri and Yamaguchi Momoe, but also to reconfigure
Hibari's image as she aged.
Hopefully you'll be able to find this in your local library, but if
not, the University of Chicago will sell you the pdf for $10!
