This one probably wouldn't be Chinmoku, as this film is from 1971 and is in colour.
Perhaps the film you're asking about is Nagisa Oshima's The Revolt, which showed at the BFI recently as Shiro from Amakusa, the Christian Rebel.
Its from 1962.
