These probably has nothing to do with success and most of the
PR/propaganda was not through mainstream channels. Just like the
pre-sales ticket system in the 1980s and 90s, the majority of the
tickets are 'bought' and handed out by the institutions that financed
the picture. In the case of Kofuku no Kagaku I wouldn't be surprises if
the supporters of this religion received or bought/were forced to buy a
certain amount of tickets, which they will hand out to potential
victims. Maybe you should ask a few of the middle-aged ladies where they
got their tickets.

>> No, it's not. When I lived in Kyoto we were offered free tickets to
>> religious anime, probably also Kofuku no Kagaku, playing at one of the
>> regular cinemas. Just an hour ago I happened to be in a small bookstore
>> opposite of Shinanomachi Station, where one fourth was reserved for Soka
>> Gakkai publications, amongst which one shelf of Ikeda Daisaku's Ningen
>> Kakumei in manga format. Religious institutions, political parties and local
>> community offices are very much aware of the fact that manga-ish PR nowadays
