The New York Times called this film “an intriguing cross-cultural
experiment,”and the FCCJ is honored to provide this sneak preview so
that our members can be among the first in Japan to see just how
intriguing it is.

Filmed entirely on location in California with an all-American crew,
Sideways is the Japanese “reimagining” of the 2005 Academy Award-
winning film of the same title. It is directed by Cellin Gluck, an
American born and raised in Japan, and features a soundtrack composed
and supervised by Hawaiian-born ukulele artist Jake Shimabukuro,
featuring such 1980’s hits as Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time.”

A coming-of-age movie for those past the point of no return, Sideways
is the heartwarming tale of two old friends, on a journey to
rediscover their friendship.

Michio (Fumiyo Kohinata) is a struggling scriptwriter. His best
friend, Daisuke (Katsuhisa Namase), is about to get married and has
planned one last fling as a bachelor. Together, they venture out on a
weeklong road trip through Napa Valley, where they serendipitously
meet up with Mayuko (Kyoka Suzuki), whom Michio had tutored-and
fallen in love with-20 years earlier as an exchange student. Also
along for the ride is Mayuko’s free-spirited friend Mina (Oscar
nominee Rinko Kikuchi), who runs a local eatery.

Sideways was coproduced by Fuji TV, purveyor of Bayside Shakedown 2,
Japan’s highest grossing live action film ever, and 20th Century Fox,
producer of the all-time box office champion Titanic.

Sideways star Fumiyo Kohinata began his career as a member of On
Theatre Jiyugekijo before moving into movies and TV. His first
starring role was in Angel in the Box (2004). His recent films
include Hero (2007), I Just Didn’t Do It (2008), The Magic Hour
(2008), 20th Century Boys (2008) and A Pierrot (2009).
