I didn't know about that. I must say, I live in Switzerland and so am not
always up to date with the releases in the US. But then, that might be a
good opportunity for Frako, at least to check out the movie. And I agree,
The Girl who Leapt Through Time is a really enjoyable film. I also have it
on DVD.

Summer Wars actually opened at the IFC Center in New York yesterday.
The NY Times used Rachel Seitz, a second stringer who frequently reviews
Bollywood and other Asian films, as its critic, and she gave it a brief but
positive notice:

Among Hosoda Mamoru's other works is the quirky but too neglected The Girl
Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakero Shoju), unfortunately not related to
Frako's posting topic.

Hello !
I would definitely recommend the animation film Summer Wars by
Mamoru
Hosoda. Actually, Hanafuda is an important part of the plot in this movie,
as it plays the role of tradition coming to the rescue of high-tech
modernity. It has come out on DVD in France, with French, Dutch and Spanish
subs (if any can also be useful to you), but unfortunately, no English subs.
There is an American edition due to come out on February 15, 2011, which
definitely has English subs:

Besides this movie, I don=92t have any other example to offer. Actually, I
didn=92t know at all about Hanafuda until I watched Summer Wars.
I hope this helps somehow!

What's a decent Japanese film that features a hanafuda (flower card) game
in which we can clearly see the cards and which figures in the plot somehow?
Ideally the film would be available on DVD and have English subtitles.
