Since I haven't seen the movie my reply might not be very relevent. However
this relation between a film relying heavily on special effects and
animation per say reminds me of an article by Dudley Andrew in CINéMAS ("A
Film Aesthetic to Discver" in vol.17, number 2-3) in which he writes that
some "densely composited" films could be "classified as animation". His view
on this is very negative - these movies are seen as manipulated and
controlled (instead of being a means or occasion for discovery).
