Japanese Modern Art History Position

The Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia University in Tokyo,
an institution founded on Christian principles of
education, invites applications for an open-rank
(assistant professor, associate professor, or full
professor) position in the area of modern Japanese art
history or visual culture. The position is part of the
Comparative Culture Program within the Faculty, which also
includes literature, philosophy and religion. The
appointment will be effective from either April 1 or
September 21, 2011.

Although the candidate$B!G(Bs expertise may treat any aspect
of Japanese art from the Meiji through the contemporary
periods, the ideal candidate should have solid training in
new methodologies of art history and be able to conduct
visually grounded, interdisciplinary analyses of film,
popular culture, and/or material culture. The normal
undergraduate teaching load is two courses per semester,
including an introductory course in critical thinking.
Depending on rank, the successful applicant teaches in the
Japanese Studies M.A. Program. Applicants are expected to
have completed a Ph. D. by the time of appointment and
should be able to demonstrate excellent teaching and
lecturing skills. The language of instruction is English.
Japanese language fluency and professional or scholarly
experience in Japan are assets, as is university
administrative experience.

academic record, research interests, teaching experience,
and reasons for the applicant

publication samples, a brief description of courses the
applicant has taught or would be prepared to develop, and
