Cannes announced its competition. Japan is the only Asian country represented, and by two films: Kawase's Hanezu no tsuki and Miike's Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai. The latter will be the first 3D film in Cannes competition. (It's a remake of the Kobayashi film.)

It's a tough slate, including Almodovar, Malick von Trier and the Dardennes.
