SPECIAL SCREENING in collaboration with TIFF + NFC

A STORY FROM CHIKAMATSU (Chikamatsu Monogatari)
Japan, 1954 102 minutes In Japanese with English subtitles

Featuring a special Q&A appearance by legendary actress Kyoko Kagawa,
recipient of the FIAF Award 2011, joined by National Film Center of
Japan Chief Curator Hisashi Okajima and Tokyo International Film
Festival Secretary-General Nobushige Toshima

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
Q&A session: 4:30 – 5:30 pm
Cocktail party: 5:40 – 6:40 pm
Screening: 6:40 – 8:25 pm

Kenji Mizoguchi’s classic film, set in 17th-century Japan and drawn
from the repertory of Bunraku puppet theater, is a haunting tale of
doomed love between a merchant’s wife, Osan (Kyoko Kagawa) and her
husband’s employee, Mohei (Kazuo Hasegawa), in an era when the
punishment for adultery was crucifixion. Nominated for the Palme d'Or
at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, the luminous black-and-white “A
Story from Chikamatsu” is ultimately a cautionary tale about morality
and fate, as the lovers’ true feelings for each other emerge only
after they have been accused of infidelities they never actually
committed.

The Movie Committee is honored to present this special screening
event, in collaboration with the Tokyo International Film Festival
(TIFF) and the National Film Center (NFC), to celebrate Ms. Kagawa’s
selection as the recipient of the FIAF Award 2011, as well as the
October 22 kickoff of the 24th edition of TIFF. Ms. Kagawa will be
conferred with the FIAF award at a ceremony on October 24 during the
festival, in honor of her dedication to the cause of film
preservation. She joins such luminaries as Martin Scorsese, Ingmar
Bergman, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Peter Bogdanovich and Liv Ullmann in
receiving the award. The International Federation of Film Archives
(FIAF) brings together over 150 institutions in nearly 80 countries,
all devoted to preserving the world’s moving image heritage. Ms.
Kagawa, who was a favorite of Japan’s great directors — Kenji
Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu, Akira Kurosawa, Mikio Naruse — has also been
a longtime supporter of the NFC and TIFF.

Under the slogan "Believe! The power of films," the 24th edition of
TIFF will feature dozens of exciting new films from around the world
in six main sections. Ms. Kagawa will be the subject of a major
retrospective screening series at the festival, entitled "Kyoko Kagawa
and the Masters." It will be co-hosted by the NFC and will include a
newly restored print of "A Story from Chikamatsu."

Please join Ms. Kagawa, Mr. Okajima and Mr. Toshima for cocktails
before the film screening, from 5:40 – 6:40. The cocktail party is
¥1,260 (incl. tax). Space is limited to the first thirty (30) people
to sign up at the FCCJ Reception Desk (3211-3161). On September 6,
please pick up your ticket at the front desk and join us in the
Anteroom. Cancellations received after noon on the day of the
screening will be charged in full.

You may attend the Q&A session and/or film screening without attending
the cocktail party. All movie screenings are private, noncommercial
events restricted to FCCJ members and their guests.
