Hi Petra,
I don't think of of Somai's work ever got released on DVD outside of Japan, but the Japanese DVD release from 2000 of his final film, Kaza Hana, certainly did.We screened this as part of the Japan Foundation UK touring season back in 2008, so I also am pretty sure the JF has a English-subbed 35mm print of the film too.

Dear Aaron Gerow and hello to the list,

I take the opportunity with this mail this mail to introduce myself to the list which I am following for a while. My apologies for the omission.

Since 2008 I am part of the Nippon Connection Film Festival in Frankfurt and after being in charge for the press and public relations, my interest in Japanese film and culture gave me the way to focus on the film programming.

This year I had the chance to attend Tokyo FILMeX for the first time and to see some of the fantastic Shinji Somai films unfortunately some of them without subtitles. I researched for DVDs with English subs without any results yet. Does possibly anybody heard or knows about DVD releases with subtitles in English or even Spanish or French? I am very thankful for any information.

Thank you very much

Best

I mentioned this on my blog:

But there is a new anthology out on the great director Somai Shinji that is worth a look:

        Kimura Tatsuya, Nakamura Hideyuki, Fujii Jinshi, eds. Yomigaeru Somai Shinji (Tokyo: Insukuriputo, 2011)

        $BLZB<7z:H!"CfB<=(G7!"F#0f?N;RJT!Xa4$kAjJF?5Fs!Y%$%s%9%/%j%W%H!"(B2011$BG/!#(B

        ISBN 978-4-900997-32-5

It came out in time for the Tokyo FilmEx retro on him, so hopefully this will generate a bit more interest in this neglected genius.
