Jidaigeki with English subtitles

Amazon is the best place to start for high quality productions; Amazon UK seems slightly better organized than USA and also they have lots of titles thru BFI and other UK producers. Search "samurai films." Some Korean and Chinese versions also have English titles [you can find these also on the
Japanese "Yahoo Auction" site] of varying degrees of intelligibility, but it is a grab-bag and you can never be sure how good the titles are, or even if there are any! (Beware that on Korean & Chinese dvds, the words printed on the package "English subtitles" is only true, in my experience,
about half the time. Frequently they have Japanese subtitles instead.)

Ebay is unbeatable for samurai films, and there are many odd little gems available that one would never expect to find with titles. One assumes most Ebay versions, particularly those coming out of USA, are pirated & privately produced; nonetheless they are almost always Region-free and have
fair to good titles. On Ebay there are many shops apparently catering to a huge underground fan cult for "samurai films" (also lots of yakuza); there is one particularly dependable shop with a huge collection. For more info on this, contact me offlist.
