Hi Aaron,

I was rather surprised to see that there was no award given for Best
Documentary, especially after you say The Mainichi is one of the few major
awards that focuses on documentaries amongst other things.

These days I'm quite out of touch with the documentary scene in Japan... what is
the situation like may I ask? is there really a dearth of good docs right now
coming out of Japan? what were the high points in Japanese documentaries last
year? who were the bright sparks of last year?

Just a quick observation/query - why no Ofuji Noburo Award this year?

Forgive me if I got any of the name readings wrong. The original Japanese

The Mainichi tends to be fairly conservative, but they are one of the few major
awards that also focuses on the technical staff and other genres like
documentary and animation.

Jim O'Rourke used to be a member of KineJapan, so if he's still a member,
congratulations!
