“If you're looking for high speed, high style, hard luck, and the
quirky lusts and lunacies of post-Bubble Japan, Sabu's your man—” so
said the Japan Society of New York in its introduction to a
retrospective devoted to the cult auteur earlier this year. Proving
that he continues to “bring a fresh and frantic twist to traditional
film genres,” Sabu now unveils his latest adrenaline jolt, and
although it features the welcome return of his signature running
scenes, it couldn’t be more different in tone from his past work.
A film adaptation of Yumi Unita’s much-loved manga of the same name,
“Bunny Drop” unites hot property Kenichi Matsuyama (“Gantz,” “My Back
Page,” “Norwegian Wood”) with TV’s most popular child star, Mana
Ashida (NTV’s “Mother,” “Confessions”), in a story about a man trying
to raise his 6-year-old half-aunt. Single salaryman Daikichi
(Matsuyama) notices a little girl at his grandfather’s funeral, and
wonders why she hasn’t been invited inside. He soon discovers that her
name is Rin (Ashida), and she’s the illegitimate daughter of his
grandfather by an unknown mother. When his family suggests that she be
put in foster care due to the social stigma attached to taking her in,
Daikichi unwittingly blurts out that he’ll take on the responsibility
of raising her himself. And so begins a child-rearing odyssey filled
with hilarious challenges and unexpected joys. They say it takes a
village to raise a child; in “Bunny Drop,” support often comes from
the unlikeliest of places.
Join the Movie Committee as we screen Sabu’s heartwarming, inspiring
(yes, you read that right) tribute to parenting ahead of its August 20
debut in Japanese cinemas. The Ministry of Health and Welfare would do
best to take note.
All movie screenings are private, noncommercial events restricted to
FCCJ members and their guests.
