[John Wheeler]

Hello all,

I joined a few weeks ago, but because of the developing crisis in Japan I
hesitated to introduce myself right away.  My name is John Wheeler and I am
a master's student in modern Japanese literature and film at the University
of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  While there aren't many people formally
studying Japanese film here, there was enough interest among my fellow
graduate students in the topic that I started a reading/screening group this
semester.  So far it has mostly been a very broad survey of Japanese cinema
but in future semesters I hope to focus our discussion topics.  One of my
colleagues from the group recommended this listserv and I'm already really
glad I joined.  I haven't really refined my research interests yet (I still
have a lot of general knowledge to learn), but I have recently been studying
contemporary independent cinema in Japan.  In any case, I look forward to
continuing to receive everyone's posts.
