Join the Movie Committee for this exciting sneak peek of the most
talked-about film of the Venice, Toronto and Busan Film Festivals,
following its Japan premiere at Tokyo FILMeX Film Festival on November
23, and ahead of its Japanese theatrical release on December 17.
CUT is a rare example of international collaboration at the service of
a truly independent work: it was shot in Japan with Japanese stars,
directed by an influential foreigner, produced by American, Turkish,
French, Japanese, Iranian and Korean producers, and financed by a
consortium of foreign and Japanese investors.
Upon its September world premiere in Venice, Screen Daily hailed it as
"One of the most significant [films] to come out this year in Venice,
both in shape and content ... Bound to become an international
festival favorite and art house must." Michel Ciment, editor of
Positif, called it "One of the most original films ever made ... Henri
Langlois meets ‘Reservoir Dogs.’” And Kiyoshi Kurosawa said that
“Naderi's masterful handling of light and shadow has now reached
unprecedented heights of beauty and poetry."
CUT views the decline of cinema culture in Japan through the eyes of
Shuji (Hidetoshi Nishijima of “Dolls”), a young filmmaker who craves
great cinema like a junkie craves a fix. Shuji screens his favorite
films to small audiences on his rooftop, and preaches the gospel of
the classics with the manic energy of a TV evangelist to whoever will
listen. After finding himself in trouble with the yakuza, he puts his
love for movies to the test, offering to work as a human punching bag
in return for clearing out the debt left by his brother, who borrowed
from the mob in order to finance Shuji’s films. As he endures blow
after blow, Shuji’s cinephilia gives him the strength to survive — and
the audience is treated to an extraordinary countdown of his Top 100
favorite films of all time.
Prior to the screening, please join Mr. Naderi and the film’s
producers for a glass of wine and light snacks at our Meet the
Filmmakers Cocktail Party, from 6:00 – 6:45 pm. The cocktail party is
¥1,260 (incl. tax). You may attend the screening without attending the
cocktail party. All movie screenings are private, noncommercial events
restricted to FCCJ members and their guests.
