I forgot to mention that the last volume in Shinwasha's series of books on Japanese film history (Nihon eigashi sosho) came out at the end of last year. The last book was appropriately on the first films in Japan: Nihon eiga no tanjo. It was edited by Iwamoto Kenji and features some great articles on a variety of topics. I have an intro on my blog:
