Tanaka Masumi

Abe Kasho reported on Facebook that the film scholar Tanaka Masumi has died. He apparently collapsed at home after returning from Sawato Midori's benshi recital at Kinokuniya Hall on December 29. He was 65. Tanaka was not an academic film scholar, but he was very good and produced a lot of top level work, especially on Ozu Yasujiro, but not confined to him. I had the pleasure of doing a roundtable talk with him for Eiga geijutsu in the spring (on the subject of film and academia--and on March 10th!) and will be using his work in my seminar this semester.
