I'm shocked and deeply saddened to hear this. I first met Scott when he and
Maureen came to a conference in Iowa City, early in my graduate studies.
Gracious is the word that comes to mind. The whole field was contentious in
those days and it was rare to meet someone who was engaged in those debates
and at the same time encouraging of positions that didn't match his own.
When I think of how enjoyable it was to meet and discuss with my colleagues
at SCMS last week I'm glad that his style, as well as his ideas, have had
an influence on our world.
My condolences to Maureen and Scott's family. He will be deeply missed.
