For a big academic conference, the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences annual conference is usually at the end of May or the beginning of June.

I had a request from a local high school teacher for primary and secondary sources, including films, on Japanese expansion in Asia roughly 1931-1941. We own one propaganda film from colonial Korea, Heitai-san (J. title), which popped into my head and has English subtitles. I was wondering if there are others out there, documentaries, dramas, or original films from the period, that might have been released on DVD/BD with English subs from any region.

The Japanese Anime Classic Collection also contains a variety of anime from
the 1920s and 1930s, including Taro's Monster Hunt (*????????*, 1935), a
Disney-inspired short that ends with Taro vanquishing a ghostly army and
waving a fan depicting the rising sun.  Some of the shorts are available
for streaming (without subtitles for the benshi narratives) through
Crunchyroll <http://www.crunchyroll.com/japanese-anime-classic-collection>.

The Japanese Anime Classic Collection also contains a variety of anime from
the 1920s and 1930s, including Taro's Monster Hunt (*????????*, 1935), a
Disney-inspired short that ends with Taro vanquishing a ghostly army and
waving a fan depicting the rising sun.  Some of the shorts are available
for streaming (without subtitles for the benshi narratives) through

The Foreign Correspondents' Club is hosting two upcoming screenings that demonstrate a pronounced divergence in style and subject matter: The World of Geisha (1973) on August 24, along with the world premiere of highlights from the five new films being released to mark the 45th anniversary of Nikkatsu Roman Porno; and Studio Ghibli?s Red Turtle on August 31. Hi Roger,

Perhaps I?m wrong, but my guess is Iijima Tadashi?s 1928 book Shinema no ABC (????????ABC???: ?????,1928). The book has 248 page and DOES begin with an article titled ?Rhythm in Film? (????????). 

Iijima was known as a translator of L?on Moussinac?s Naissance du cin?ma (1925) and Le cin?ma sovi?tique (1928) and in this article cites his ?Du rythme cin?graphique? (1923).
