Nearly 30 years after he read Shusaku Endo?s Tanizaki Prize-winning 1966 novel about the persecution of ?hidden Christians? (kakure kirishitan) in 17th-century Japan, acquired the rights and set about adapting the monumental work, the legendary director has completed the final in his trilogy of faith-based films, and it is being awaited around the world with enormous anticipation. ?Silence? tells the story of two Portuguese ?padres,? Sebastian Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), who journey from Macao to Japan to search for their missing mentor Christavao Ferreira (Liam Neeson), after receiving the startling news that he has gone native. The priests begin their arduous journey to the Japanese heart of darkness with a lapsed Christian named Kichijiro (Yosuke Kubozuka), settling in with clandestine worshippers in the tiny village of Tomogi. But soon enough, the area?s ruthless Inquisitor Inoue (Issey Ogata) throws Rodrigues and his new followers behind bars, and sets about putting their faith to the ultimate test. ?The price for your glory,? he gloats to the padre, ?is their suffering.? Through it all, despite Rodrigues? entreaties to God, He remains silent. This article came out of my experience of the highly successful Uchida retrospective held at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York in the Fall of this year. This is my first published work for WCP since my review of the DVD of Kaneto Shind??s The Naked Island in May of this year. Thanks to those who responded favorably to that earlier article, and to whose kind comments I have yet to reply. My apologies for that. It has been organized by the Jissoji Akio kenkyukai. It started on the 29th of November and runs to the 11th of December. Entry for each film is 1000 yen. There are a few screenings of a new 30-minute documentary film, Kantoku Jissoji Akio, on the director. Four Jissoji 25-minute TBS TV drams from 1962 and 1963 reveal interesting camerawork with long handheld takes and other features unusual for TV at the time. The themes mostly dealt with the complex psychology of pregnant unmarried teenage women who were trying to decide whether to have an abortion - sometimes the identity of the father is in doubt. This theme turns up in some of Jissoji's late ATG films. The first of the TV episodes had a script by Oshima. The Kenkyukai hopes to continue to promote the study and screening of Jissoji's many works ranging from Ultraman to ATG films, and Teito monogatari. A product of Kara Juro's underground theatre troupe, Nezu came to fame in the 1980s for work on TV and in films by Yanagimachi Mitsuo (A Farewell to the Land) and Kurosawa Akira (Ran and Kagemusha). I particularly remember him as a regular in the films of Ishii Takashi, including Gonin and A Night in Nude. I also liked his stage name: while his real surname was Nezu, Nezu Jinpachi was one of the legendary samurai serving Sanada Yukimura. Nezu had been suffering from various ailments and had officially retired from acting in 2010. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__headlines.yahoo.co.jp_hl-3Fa-3D20161229-2D00000067-2Ddal-2Dent&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=JLkBPrpG5mRN4YA3eOLp0dXDXb0wR4t2RrtD9CFvVRU&s=I90erj8Kq-o6zUklKv56g87P1mqzVcQpQzHsyheFj64&e= Aaron Gerow Professor Film and Media Studies Program/East Asian Languages and Literatures Director of Graduate Studies, EALL Yale University 320 York Street, Room 311 PO Box 208324 New Haven, CT 06520-8324 USA Phone: 1-203-432-7082 Fax: 1-203-432-6729 e-mail: aaron.gerow at yale.edu website: www.aarongerow.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He also mentioned in May 1968 that one of the radical Trotskyist student groups had arranged a screening, which he thought was ridiculous. That's all I've got... I first met Kota at Kinema Club II in Hawaii in 2003. At the time he was a graduate student at Irvine. After graduating, he worked at Irvine and then landed at Washington State University, where he taught Japanese literature and film. He's been working on a book about the emergence of the modern suburb and colonialism. This is horribly sad news. Markus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
