The movie was screened this year in Rotterdam and it is now at the Taiwan International Decumentary Festival where I think it just got some prize. Besides being a very good and aesthetically engaging work, it's also interesting because there are many images/photos of Japan, and of course Taiwan, during the 30s, and it explores - albeit with an experimental touch - the artistic relations between Taiwan and Japan during the colonial period. The topic of the documentary is Le Moulin Poetry Society: "After forty years of Japanese colonial rule, Taiwan's first modern art group, Le Moulin Poetry Society, emerged in the 1930s with their poetic protest against the colonial power's cultural superiority. Regarding the Surrealists as their absolute role models, Le Moulin poets composed poetry in an uncompromising and sophisticated style to confront the turbulent era they lived in" It was a fascinating surprise for me and so I thought it may be of interst for the members of KineJapan. My name is Hailey Lain, and I am currently a college student in the United States of America at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, pursuing a degree in Visual Arts with a concentration in Traditional Animation. Recently, I discovered a very old cartoon from 1967 titled "Golden Bat (?? ???)." It was translated and brought overseas to several countries, but as of today only certain versions of it still exist to common knowledge. The Italian version, localized as "Fantaman," has been posted to Youtube in its entirety. The English version, however, localized as "Phantaman" (where the titular character's name within the show was "Phantoma, Warrior of Justice") seems to have fallen into obscurity due to the fact that it was only ever broadcast in English in Australia starting in the year 1968 and was never released on VHS or DVD. Because of the show's age and the fact that no episodes have ever been shared online, it's believed that nobody thought to record the episodes as they were airing on television. There is, however, evidence that it did once exist in English, according to one very low-quality recording on Youtube, linked here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.youtube.com_watch-3Fv-3DuL-5FJd9sKOww&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=z-kvxi-uRDFT8xcybfrIkeppERJKNYelHUMwql3ClME&s=iyJH5DuLJ0apMAi9RBJQ5kTXLMoO4IKXpxFHIsP4m0I&e= ...and a web page dedicated to what information is still known about the show as it existed in English, linked here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__home.alphalink.com.au_-7Eroglen_phantoma.htm&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=z-kvxi-uRDFT8xcybfrIkeppERJKNYelHUMwql3ClME&s=YYrdwrKca2nW_opLhJ75uUPPuwNOvYlRCLiCmZUr6X4&e= I have been putting feelers out all over the place to see if there might yet be any trace of the English dub of the series as it was once broadcast in Australia. To date, I have contacted the US Library of Congress, the National Library of Australia, Nine Network (on which the cartoon once aired), Mr. Burr Middleton (who provided the English voices for many of the show's characters), Network Ten (on which the cartoon also aired in the sixties and seventies), and several other organizations dedicated to the preservation and research into film and television history. I was wondering if perhaps there might be any record of Phantaman or Phantoma (or, potentially, "Golden Bat" or "Ougon Batto") that the members of the Kinema Club might be able to help to find, and, if so, would there be any way for them to info me on it? Anything would help, be it the actual episodes, the audio recordings for the English airings, scripts, or even just a lead to further my research in a different direction. Thank you so incredibly much in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon. Cheers! Sincerely, Hailey Lain -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Tetsuko Ishida (Yo Yoshida) has always disliked her cousin Natsuko Kotani (Yoshino Kimura), ever since the childhood morning she ruined her favorite dress with malicious glee. The girls grow up and willingly lose track of each other? until Tetsuko, now a successful lawyer, is hired by Natsuko, who turns out to be a natural-born swindler. Yoshida and Kimura are perfectly matched in this clarion call to female comradeship and empowerment, a moving drama that is cleverly punctuated by unforgettably off-kilter comic moments and inspired staging. *For more (in Japanese)*: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__goo.gl_VVx0XM&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=CeaE6Y25aVvyaTkc0RI5YFkTm2SUycgLzJY0ZYzeD8Q&s=3i_wndHauMuLjDiyc7DXNlpWc-5u1WLrHqzsS5QqSJ8&e= -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Some of the major mail services, such as Yahoo, AOL, and Hotmail, have been rejecting mail sent from KineJapan. It has gotten so bad that some members have been automatically unsubscribed by the OSU server after all the mail that has bounced back. Researching the matter, I believe it has to do with new standards of authentication that these services are using to weed out spam, called DMARC. From what I understand, these services are rejecting any mail where the From line is not identical to the sender. The problem is that this is normal in most mailing lists: here at KineJapan, the sender is the KineJapan server and the member who sent the mail is in the From line. I tried changing the settings to ?funge? the From line (which is why for the last few weeks you have been getting mail with the From line ?XXX via KineJapan?), but that apparently hasn?t worked. So I tried changing the settings again to make mail ?anonymous,? which means the mail address of the original sender is completely hidden and everything comes from KineJapan. We?ll see if this solves the problem, but I do want to let people know that this means that unless you put your name in the post itself, no one will now know who sent it. So please put your name to mail you are sending to the list. The dramatic transformation that Japan experienced under the high-growth economy (1955-1972) was not merely political, social, economic, and cultural, but also visual. My key claim is that the ways in which individuals saw themselves in society radically changed amidst the whirlwind of high growth. They became deeply embedded in the newly emerging national space, and they were keenly aware of this change. While the viewers acquired vision as expansive as a television camera?s reach, they also internalized television?s gaze, turning themselves into the objects of that very gaze. Put simply, they began to see their own everyday life as if it was on the television screen. Their life was thus visually linked to the national drama called ?Japan under the high-growth economy,? as it dynamically unfolded in front of their eyes. Yoshikuni Igarashi is a specialist in modern Japanese cultural history. He is the author of *Bodies of Memory: Narratives of War in Postwar Japanese Culture, 1945-1970* (Princeton University Press, 2000) and *Homecomings: The Belated Return of Japan?s Lost Soldiers* (Columbia University Press, forthcoming in 2016). The radical transformation of Japanese society in the late 1960s and the 1970s has been the focus of his recent research. Lecture in English. No prior registration necessary. Once again, the festival presents more than 100 short and feature films, including many German, European, and international premieres. The lineup includes such critically acclaimed films as Ryosuke Hashiguchi?s Three Stories of Love and veteran director Yoji Yamada?s Nagasaki: Memories of My Son. Animated films like Shunji Iwai?s The Case of Hana & Alice and documentaries like Kazuhiro Soda?s Oyster Factory are also part of the festival?s diversity. The complete program can be found at www.nipponconnection.com . Many filmmakers will come all the way from Japan to introduce their works at the festival in person. Among them will be Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who will receive this year's Nippon Honor Award for his outstanding contributions to Japanese cinema. While two of his latest films ? Creepy and Journey to the Shore ? are part of the regular Nippon Cinema section, two more of his classics ? Cure and Tokyo Sonata ? will be presented as special screenings. Other guests include directors like Isao Yukisada (Pink and Gray), Daishi Matsunaga (Pieta in the Toilet), and Satoko Yokohama (The Actor). Moreover, actor Kiyohiko Shibukawa, who can be seen starring in such films as Eiji Uchida's Lowlife Love, Gakuryu Ishii's That's It, and Sion Sono's Love & Peace, will attend the festival. Altogether, more than 50 Japanese filmmakers and artists are expected as guests: www.nipponconnection.com/guests.html The Nippon Visions section will again feature a variety of alternative and critical perspectives in both fiction and documentary films. Productions from big studios and from independent and student filmmakers are united in the Nippon Animation section. The film program is topped off by the retrospective Ghosts & Demons ? Scary Tales from Japan. Nine classics of Japanese kaidan and horror film from the late 1940s to the 1960s will be accompanied by a lecture by Dr. Elisabeth Scherer (University of D?sseldorf) as well as by individual introductions given by Tom Mes, Dr. Alex Zahlten and others. Among the special highlights of the film program is the film and music performance by experimental filmmaker Takashi Makino and British Free Jazz musician Hilary Jeffery. The Japan Visualmedia Translation Academy (JVTA) will present a special screening of Hiroaki Yoshida's Twilight of the Cockroaches, with new subtitles provided by JVTA exclusively for Nippon Connection and a lecture by Jonathan M. Hall (Pomona College). Nippon Connection is also proud to showcase the international premiere of the Netflix Japan series Hibana. Ryuichi Hiroki served as main director for the adaptation of Naoki MATAYOSHI?s best?selling novel. As always, talks with filmmakers, panel discussions, and further lectures like the one given by film scholar and critic Dennis Vetter on the visualization of the March 2011 triple disaster in Japanese documentary films will provide valuable insights into Japanese film production and the wider social and political context of cinema. I was laughing so loudly in the office while reading it that I might have disturbed people in the hallway. So refreshing to see real replies to the standard thoughtless interview questions!
