Busy actress Hitomi Kuroki marks a bold and assured directorial debut with
this delightfully droll adaptation of a best-selling novel about polar
opposites who attract, even as they repel. Tetsuko Ishida (Yo Yoshida) has
always disliked her cousin Natsuko Kotani (Yoshino Kimura), ever since the
childhood morning she ruined her favorite dress with malicious glee. The
girls grow up and willingly lose track of each other… until Tetsuko, now a
successful lawyer, is hired by Natsuko, who turns out to be a natural-born
swindler. Yoshida and Kimura are perfectly matched in this clarion call to
female comradeship and empowerment, a moving drama that is cleverly
punctuated by unforgettably off-kilter comic moments and inspired staging.
