From its beginnings with the great Rikidozan and now generating over $100 million a year, pro wrestling is very serious business indeed. Thanks to the Dramatic Dream Team (DDT), it is also sometimes very silly business, with matches that strike a perfect balance of the hair-raising and the hilarious. The team?s astounding athleticism, creative costuming and dazzling choreography have made it one of the top names in indie wrestling, with ardent fans spanning the globe. Our screening will be preceded by a live Power Point presentation (you read that right) by DDT star Super Sasadango Machine, custom-created for his FCCJ appearance. Co-directed by wrestler Muscle Sakai and acclaimed documentarian Tetsuaki Matsue (?Live Tape,? ?Flashback Memories 3D?), both of whom will be on hand for the Q&A afterward, the film is a fittingly scruffy tribute to DDT?s tough boys with soft underbellies, as they approach their 20th anniversary. *For more (in Japanese)*: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__liveviewing.jp_obpw2016_&d=DgIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=nIeaR20qu44Yt9GjHn_juigazR-8W5TPhwNyEFzotEA&s=oZUCvBY9oQsOQqjoRnr01wpOJ6wqUhRQfEOLcnjrosk&e= -- Posted by Eija Niskanen -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... He was only 70. Starting out as an actor at Kara Juro's Jokyo Gekijo, he became famous from the 1980s as a bold and imaginative producer, not only enabling such films as Suzuki Seijun's Zigeunerweisen and Sakamoto Junji's Knockout, but getting them the attention they deserved through unique exhibition modes that avoided existing distributors and theaters. Zigeunerweisen, for instance, was shown in Tokyo in a "air dome" he built under Tokyo Tower. Film releases were events. Marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of director Tai Kato (1916-1985), Shochiku has digitally remastered the documentary, and it is sure to astound today?s audiences not only with its glorious visuals and dazzling performances, but also with its groundbreaking photographic artistry. The film follows the young people who formed a Japanese music ensemble called Ondekoza in 1971 on Sado Island, under the leadership of Tagayasu Den. They live, rehearse and physically train together in Spartan conditions, crafting their own instruments, creating their own choreography and sewing their costumes. And then, they begin to perform. Working with legendary designer Tadanori Yokoo and Chiyo Umeda, who create colorful, otherworldly sets, Kato?s unique camera techniques match their visual brilliance, capturing the performers as they achieve astonishing levels of virtuosity, transforming the screen into a perfect expression of art?s transcendent power. Acclaimed musician Eitetsu Hayashi, Ondekoza?s breakout star, and remastering producer Tetsuya Nakagawa will appear at a Q&A session following the screening.
