The papers are reporting that the film producer and director Arato Genjiro has died. He was only 70. Starting out as an actor at Kara Juro's Jokyo Gekijo, he became famous from the 1980s as a bold and imaginative producer, not only enabling such films as Suzuki Seijun's Zigeunerweisen and Sakamoto Junji's Knockout, but getting them the attention they deserved through unique exhibition modes that avoided existing distributors and theaters. Zigeunerweisen, for instance, was shown in Tokyo in a "air dome" he built under Tokyo Tower. Film releases were events. In 1995, he directed his first film, Father Fucker, and won much acclaim for the 2003 Akame 48 Waterfalls.
