So, a great time to catch some beautiful Wakamatsu films on the big screen! The space is a tiny, 30-seat theater in the heart of Williamsburg, and a real cultural institution-- one of the last of its kind left in New York. Every screening is only $5, and everything is entirely volunteer-run. Its address is 124 S. 3rd St, near Bedford Ave. This month we're screening *Daydream*, *Affairs Within Walls, Embryo Hunts in Secret, Violated Angels, Go Go Second Time Virgin, *and *Ecstasy of the Angels*. If you're in the New York area over the next few months, I highly recommend a visit! Each film will be screened approximately three times. Routledge 230 pages | 13 B/W Illus. The natural and man-made cataclysmic events of the 11 March 2011 disaster, or 3.11, have dramatically altered the status quo of contemporary Japanese society. While much has been written about the social, political, economic, and technical aspects of the disaster, this volume represents one of the first in-depth explorations of the cultural responses to the devastating tsunami, and in particular the ongoing nuclear disaster of Fukushima. This book explores a wide range of cultural responses to the Fukushima nuclear calamity by analyzing examples from literature, poetry, manga, theatre, art photography, documentary and fiction film, and popular music. Individual chapters examine the changing positionality of post-3.11 northeastern Japan and the fear-driven conflation of time and space in near-but-far urban centers; explore the political subversion and nostalgia surrounding the Fukushima disaster; expose the ambiguous effects of highly gendered representations of fear of nuclear threat; analyze the musical and poetic responses to disaster; and explore the political potentialities of theatrical performances. By scrutinizing various media narratives and taking into account national and local perspectives, the book sheds light on cultural texts of power, politics, and space. Providing an insight into the post-disaster Zeitgeist as expressed through a variety of media genres, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Japanese Studies, Japanese Culture, Popular Culture, and Literature Studies. While primarily a stage actor, he also appeared a lot in films and on television. His films include Three Outlaw Samurai, The Face of Another, Rampo, Pistol Opera, Princess Raccoon, and 13 Assassins. For anime fans, he was the voice of Grunwald in Taiyo no Oji. He was trained at the Haiyuza at the same time Nakadai Tatsuya was (Nakadai was one year senior), so I suppose this is a bit of a shock to Nakadai (who arrives at Yale on Tuesday). https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__mainichi.jp_articles_20161024_k00_00m_040_104000c&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=MmEVgetKXnVpxXXVP-kEXzOnCQ1gBX7g-maR6eHYff0&s=Gbxqx1CP4e7Lqj-6B9tR80IDdRHUQAdm3SWak3V1WOQ&e= Aaron Gerow Professor Film and Media Studies Program/East Asian Languages and LiteraturesDirector of Graduate Studies, EALL Yale University 320 York Street, Room 311 PO Box 208324 New Haven, CT 06520-8324 USA Phone: 1-203-432-7082 Fax: 1-203-432-6729 e-mail:?aaron.gerow at yale.eduwebsite: www.aarongerow.com _______________________________________________ KineJapan mailing list KineJapan at lists.osu.edu https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__lists.osu.edu_mailman_listinfo_kinejapan&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=MmEVgetKXnVpxXXVP-kEXzOnCQ1gBX7g-maR6eHYff0&s=LMWKFG5VR_fO1msat2qXhIpbnsp-KTRLdIHn5uMfVOs&e= -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of my favorites since high school, I am thrilled with the opportunity to welcome him to Yale and talk to him about his work. We?ll show two of his films, with Q&A, and do two talk sessions with a smaller audience that are by registration only. He?ll also be catching some theater while he?s here. This year is the centennial of the birth of Kobayashi Masaki, with whom Nakadai made some of his best films. He this insisted on doing at least one Kobayashi film. We talked at first about doing two, but he was intrigued about doing an Okamoto film, so that?s the second one. Nakadai will also do some events in NYC, but we hope people can make the trek to New Haven to catch Nakadai in a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Hope to see many of you here! Dr. Yamazato was a doctor in Okinawa, but his real love was cinema. The result of his years of involvement in film was the book *An?yatasa! : Okinawa, sengo no eiga : 1945-1955*, a fascinating account of the first decade of film after the war in a place that was crazy about film. You know Kokusai Dori in Naha? That was not named "International Avenue" because of some international friendship initiative. It was named after the Kokusai Film Theater. Dr. Yamazato treated both my family and me to some wonderful nights out on the town when we visited Okinawa. I want to thank him both personally and as a film scholar. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.worldcat.org_title_anyatasa-2Dokinawa-2Dsengo-2Dno-2Deiga-2D1945-2D1955_oclc_48973852-26referer-3Dbrief-5Fresults&d=DQIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=-X4kS3cOKkzlAjLYgsTuCklmWIPHBXk_3GS3_lpz4Qc&s=w47ekMY1eFY58EVgvpIsAjz2eJ5WcD3MFYX5vkJl73U&e= Aaron Gerow Professor Film and Media Studies Program/East Asian Languages and Literatures Director of Graduate Studies, EALL Yale University 320 York Street, Room 311 PO Box 208324 New Haven, CT 06520-8324 USA Phone: 1-203-432-7082 Fax: 1-203-432-6729 e-mail: aaron.gerow at yale.edu website: www.aarongerow.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
