Call for Papers for:

Kinema Club XVII

at Meiji Gakuin University

Japanese Film Studies “Abroad”

Dates: February 20-21, 2018

Meiji Gakuin University, Department of Art Studies?

Deadine for submissions: January 31, 2018

We welcome submissions for the 17th Kinema Club Conference on Film and Moving Images from Japan.

This Kinema Club is a follow-up to the conference “From the Distant Observer - Japanese Film Studies Abroad” which took place in November 2016 at Meiji Gakuin University and will also focus on Japanese Film Studies outside of Japan.

While last year’s conference focused on the formative years of ‘Japanese Film Studies’ as a field of research, the upcoming Kinema Club aims to broaden the perspective and reflect about the challenges, achievements, problems and tasks of studying Japanese film in the past, the present, and the future.

Suggested topics are:

= challenges, goals, problems and solutions of studying Japanese film outside of Japan

= case-studies of specific countries or regions

= case studies of specific (foreign) researchers and/or specific texts by them

= access to sources and films; archives, libraries; subtitles; funding, grants; scholarly networks; etc.

= issues with regard to publishing

= institutionalized (academic) Japanese film studies (institutional pressures, organizational changes and their effect on the field, academic trends, influences from other fields, etc.)

= role of Japanese film studies within Film Studies in general

= relation of Japanese film studies with media studies, area studies, etc.

= non-academic studies of Japanese film

= situation of foreign scholars/researchers in Japan respectively Japanese scholars/researchers working outside of Japan

= experiences of ryugaku (foreigners studying in Japan, Japanese studying abroad)

= co-operations and exchange (with Japanese colleagues, institutions, etc.), networks (e.g. KineJapan), etc.

Beside individual presentations, we welcome other formats such as discussion rounds, live interviews, etc. as well. Panel submissions should at least have three presenters.

Presentations in English and Japanese are welcome.

We are looking for an open forum of (self)reflection and (self)critical discussion. We hope to assess our achievements in the past, discuss the challenges we are facing today, and how our field might develop in the future. Not least we also want to reflect on Kinema Club respectively KineJapan itself, how it has developed, what it has achieved and what it hasn’t achieved in the twenty years of its existence.

The conference will be held on February 20-21 at the Meiji Gakuin University, Shirokanedai Campus, Tokyo.

Please send abstracts of up to 200 words or any questions to: domenig at ltr.meijigakuin.ac.jp<mailto:kinemaclub13 at gmail.com>

Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2018.

We hope to see you there!

With best wishes for the festive year end season,

Roland Domenig
