Date/Time Date(s) - Thu. Feb. 16, 2017 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm Second is 'Japan Now: Explore contemporary writing and culture from Japan', an all-day event at the British Library on Sat 25 Feb 2017. Alex Kerr, author of Lost Japan, reflects on the beauty and destruction of the Japanese landscape, and leading writers, including Hiromi Kawakami, author of Strange Weather in Tokyo, Masatsugu Ono and Yoko Tawada read from new work, alongside artists who view Japan through the lens of film and photography. This ticket includes free entry into the Momoko Ando film screening at 18.30, subject to capacity. Programmed by Modern Culture in partnership with the Japan Foundation and Writers' Centre Norwich and supported by Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, the Nippon Foundation and the Japan Society.' The Momoko Ando screening mentioned is the London premiere of 0.5mm, and Momoko Ando will be introducing the film in conversation with myself. Markus ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: University of Michigan Press Date: Thu, Feb 9, 2017 at 8:01 AM Subject: New Release: 'My Life as a Filmmaker' by Yamamoto Satsuo To: My Life as a Filmmaker Volume 80 Yamamoto Satsuo; Translated, Annotated, and with an Introduction by Chia-ning Chang Translated, Annotated, and with an Introduction by Chia-ning Chang A riveting autobiography of Yamamoto Satsuo (1910?83), one of the most important and critically acclaimed postwar Japanese film directors In his posthumous autobiography, *Watakushi no eiga jinsei * (1984), Yamamoto Satsuo reflects on his career and legacy: beginning in the prewar days as an assistant director in a well-established film company under the master Naruse Mikio, to his wide-ranging experiences as a f* *ilmmaker, including his participation in the tumultuous Toho Labor Upheaval soon after Japan?s defeat in World War II and his struggles as an independent filmmaker in the 1950s and 1960s before returning to work within the mainstream industry. In the process, he established himself as one of the most prominent and socially engaged film artists in postwar Japan. Imbued with vibrant social realism and astute political commentary, his filmic genres ranged widely from melodramas, period films from the Tokugawa era, samurai action jidaigeki, social satires, and antiwar films. Providing serious insights into and trenchant critique of the moral corruption in Japanese politics, academe, industry, and society, Yamamoto at the same time produced highly successful films that offered drama and entertainment for Japanese and international moviegoers. His considerable artistic distinction, strong social and political consciousness, and filmic versatility have earned him a unique and distinguished position among Japan?s world-class film directors. In addition to detailed annotations of the autobiography, translator Chia-ning Chang offers a comprehensive introduction to the career and the significance of Yamamoto and his works in the context of Japanese film history. It contextualizes Yamamoto?s life and works in the historical and cultural zeitgeist of prewar, wartime, and postwar Japan before scrutinizing the unique qualities of his narrative voice and social conscience as a film artist. ?A magnificent memoir magnificently told. Film world: Stand up and take notice!? ?Roger Pulvers ?Chang?s translation of the filmmaker?s autobiography, *My Life a s a Filmmaker *, is masterfully done. Chang has a strong reputation in the field for introducing many important Japanese literary, cultural, and historical works to the English-language world. This will be another important, though less well-known, work to give us not only a better appreciation of one of the greatest Japanese filmmakers but also a deeper understanding of postwar Japanese film and cultural history.? ?Poshek Fu, University of Illinois *Chia-ning Chang* is Professor of Japanese at the University of California at Davis. The writer-director-star leads a stellar cast (and crew) in her gorgeously lensed reinterpretation of the oft-told ?Woman of the Snow,? from Lafcadio Hearn?s 1904 anthology ?Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things.? Shot in Sugino?s home prefecture of Hiroshima, but set in a timeless era when mountaineers sleep in huts under straw mats while factory workers engage in the production of modern electrical products, Sugino?s stylized, enigmatic work is daringly short on dialog and long on metaphor. There are scenes of such trancelike beauty and mesmerizing mystery, that the viewer soon stops puzzling over the many riddles, and succumbs to the film?s stately pace and poetic power. Sugino will be on hand with her costar, Munetaka Aoki, for the Q&A session following the screening. The National Film Center in Japan has opened a site celebrating the 100th anniversary of animation in Japan. The site features 64 animated films made between 1917 and 1941 that can be viewed in full, some with English subtitles (the site itself, however, is in Japanese and it doesn't seem to work on all browsers). You can see films by such greats as Ofuji Noburo, Seo Mitsuo, Masaoka Kenzo, Murata Yasuji, Yamamoto Sanae, Kitayama Seitaro, and Kouchi Jun?ichi. There are even some of the abstract animation films of Ogino Shigeji. A special section features the work of the pioneer animator Ofuji Noburo. The NFC is far behind other archives, such as the Korean Film Archive, in making available its films for streaming, but it is good to see this first step. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__animation.filmarchives.jp_index.html&d=DwIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=a7MrXl3Qa-zKbr-dQndY04-_MO7kj7smwMSP58H_11k&s=s8ZOxzlXyJ0lRdjH_xjLWxuKtQ8JUoj822d7sQnhQXw&e= Aaron Gerow Professor Film and Media Studies Program/East Asian Languages and Literatures Director of Graduate Studies, EALL Acting Chair, Council on East Asian Studies Yale University 320 York Street, Room 311 PO Box 208324 New Haven, CT 06520-8324 USA Phone: 1-203-432-7082 Fax: 1-203-432-6729 e-mail: aaron.gerow at yale.edu website: www.aarongerow.com -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
