My "Variety" obituary of Seijun Suzuki, which was edited down considerably from the original. He had something of a reputation as a tough interview, but when I talked to him for my book on yakuza films, he was sharp, funny and wise. "You shouldn't become so addicted to something that you lose sight of everything else," he told me. "That goes for you too, Mark -- you shouldn't become addicted to yakuza movies." I'm afraid that, as far as his films are concerned, I haven't taken that advice.
