Lasting just six hours, with forces estimated to number 180,000 ? 30,000 of whom did not survive ? its outcome brought an end to the centuries-long Warring States period. Directing just his second jidaigeki period drama (after 2015?s ?Kakekomi?) and adapting the best-selling 3-volume novel of the same name, Harada populates ?Sekigahara? with a teeming assortment of historic characters and enough political intrigue, Machiavellian maneuvering and exciting ninja action for an entire miniseries. But his focus is resolutely on the motives and strategies of the two men whose forces would meet in Gifu for the final showdown: Mitsunari Ishida (Junichi Okada) and Ieyasu Tokugawa (Koji Yakusho). This is a powerful reinterpretation that completely overturns our conventional understanding, transforming their fateful conflict into a war between justice and political opportunism. I never had a chance to see Takagi-san in person (quite unfortunately), but I?d just like to note that there is a new documentary about him and his works, titled *Hy?gen ni chikara ariya* (2016). The film was co-produced by Murayama Hideyo, the director of Documentary Film Preservation Center (Kiroku Eiga Hozon Sent? ), where hundreds of short educational films and PR documentaries are being housed, including several works by Takagi, who started his career at Iwanami in 1960. The Center is eager to put out an English-subtitled version of the documentary if the opportunity arises. The film is an engaging work that mainly traces Takagi?s close relationship with Tsuchimoto Noriaki in producing Minamata series, and it amply incorporates interviews with Ishimure Michiko, Higashi Y?ichi, Tsuchimoto and many others.
