The news services are reporting that Tsuchiya Yoshio, arguably the last of the Seven Samurai, died on February 8 at the age of 89. Tsuchiya played Rikichi in the Seven Samurai, the farmer whose wife was taken by a bandit, and who ends up being the farmer who most actively fights alongside the samurai. Tsuchiya studied at the Haiyuza before joining Toho in 1954. He appeared in many Kurosawa films, including Record of a Living Being and Red Beard, as well as in many Toho takusatsu films. Some may also remember him in Matsumoto Toshio's Funeral Parade of Roses as the patron.
