There was a Dokuritsu Eiga Nabe at OAFF last weekend. The outlook for
indecent films in Japan was dim, a pretty typical discussion of late. It’s
not so hard to make a film, but it is very tough to show it. Even tougher
to base a career on it.

I’ve always been struck that VOD doesn’t get much or any attention in these
discussions. Variety reports steady and healthy growth:

“Amazon nearly doubled its share and Netflix
<http://variety.com/t/netflix/> grew
strongly in Japan <http://variety.com/t/japan/>’s streaming market last
year as the two global services try to raise their profiles in
Asia........Total SVOD sales last is estimated at 183 billion yen ($1.7
billion), a 12.2% increase from the year before. GEM forecasts that Japan’s
streaming market will grow to 255 billion yen ($2.4 billion) in 2022.”
