[KineJapan] New Hara Film

There's a new Hara Kazuo film out. He's been working on it forever. So far,
it's shown a several festivals and to much praise....especially by
audiences, which have given him "audiences prizes" at Yamagata and Filmex.
I heard he's very frustrated the juries are snubbing him. But this is not
the usual Hara film. It's sedate in comparison and extremely long.

But I like it. Definitely seek it out.

*Today Mark Schilling published his review: *

“I wanted to tell them ‘Are you joking? Stop it!'” Hara says. “I hate it
when Japanese are praised for being so patient in a situation like that. In
the film I clearly criticize Japanese who are like that. I mean, I love
them but we ought to detest those who call someone like Shiozaki a ‘nice
guy.’ That’s the message of the film.

“If we don’t, we’ll never have real peace in this country. The willingness
of the Japanese to forgive the powerful is a danger to our democracy. You
don’t forgive them. But Japanese people are indifferent to that.”

Mark also published a review for Sunny/32 with the provocative headline, "If
idol-pop and ‘Saw’ were to have a baby, this may be it."
