This is a few days old but still worth noting: Yoshida Sadaji, one of
Toei's best cinematographers has passed away at 100. He is mainly
mentioned for his work on Fukasaku's series, Battle Without Honor Or
Humanity. However, during his relatively short though extremely prolific
career, he collaborated with many of Toei's leading directors. For
example, he was the cinematographer on Uchida Tomu's Bloody Spear at
Mount Fuji (1955), Yoshiwara (1960), and the experimental, The Mad Fox
(1962). He also worked with all other major directors at Toei,
including Makino Masahiro, Sawashima Tadashi, and Kato Tai. He was
surely a huge contributor to Toei's jidaigeki and jitsuroku styles.

He should be acknowledged as one of Japan's most influential postwar
cinematographers, despite, or perhaps precisely because he worked
manly on popular films.
